Robert Runcie
Born in Great Crosby, MerseysideBorn on 2nd of October 1921
Died on 11th of July 2000
Educated at Merchant Taylor’s in Crosby, then Brasenose College, Oxford, Robert Runcie gave distinguished service in the Scots Guards in WWII, where as a tank commander he earned the MC. He was ordained in 1951, and spent much of the subsequent 20 years of his life in theological colleges. Appointed Bishop of St Albans in 1970, he was chosen as Archbishop of Canterbury in 1979, an office he held until retirement in 1990. During his archbishopric he clashed with the Conservative Party on social matters, and with traditionalists within the Church of England on relations with Rome (and what some called his cronyism, favouring contacts from his theological college years). On issues like the ordination of women and the church’s stance on homosexuality he has been perceptively described as having nailed his colours firmly to the fence.
