Frederick Rolfe

Rolfe was an extraordinary character remembered as much for his eccentric life as for his artistic powers, though his writing may have influenced several authors, especially his novel Hadrian VII. He left school at 14, became a teacher, trained (twice) for the Catholic priesthood but was both times removed from the colleges for unacceptable behaviour. With little apparent right to the title he styled himself Baron Corvo, among other pseudonyms, and variously dabbled in photography and painting, though writing was his creative forte. He lived for years in Venice, enjoying sexual liaisons with gondoliers in their late adolescence as he had with many others, falling out with friends, and dying in poverty in his early fifties.
