Born in 1707 into humble circumstances in Bath Benjamin Robins, strangely for one born into the Quaker faith, became a major military engineering pioneer. Robins moved to London and taught mathematics, but was drawn to practical experiments that saw him work on the rifling of gun barrels, invent the ballistic pendulum, and study the effects of air-resistance on projectiles (though he also published purely mathematical works). A potentially lucrative posting as engineer general to the East India Company in 1749 sadly proved disastrous for his health, and he died in Madras on July 29th 1751.
