Alfred Robens
Born in Manchester, Greater ManchesterBorn on 18th of December 1910
Died on 27th of June 1999
Alfred Robens rose from errand boy at 15 to worker-director of a regional Cooperative Society at 22, then in 1945 became a Labour MP, briefly serving as a minister. Removed by Gaitskell as Shadow Foreign Secretary he accepted Macmillan’s offer of the chairmanship of the National Coal Board. Once seen as left wing he drifted rightwards, closing many pits during his tenure (1961 to 1971). His foully insensitive and unlawful actions after the Aberfan Disaster made him a hate figure for many in Wales and the wider mining and trade union communities.
