Trained as dancer before taking up acting. Roles in Major Barbara (1940) and other British films. Moved to Hollywood, received Academy Award nomination for role in From Here to Eternity (1953). Other nominations included The King and I (1956). Retired from film in 1969 but continued to appear on stage and television. In 1994 received special Academy Award. In 1998 was appointed a CBE.
