With solid establishment credentials - educated at Charterhouse and Balliol, President of the Oxford Union – it’s perhaps surprising that William Rees-Mogg never became a Tory MP (as has his son Jacob), though he took the first steps on that ladder by contesting an unwinnable seat in 1956. Rees-Mogg was a highly successful journalist, first at the FT then The Times, where he was editor between 1967 and 1981, and became one of the most rewarded of the great and the good: on the BBC’s Board of Governors, Chairman of the Arts Council, High Sheriff of Somerset, and a life peer.
