Charles Reade
Born in Ipsden, OxfordshireBorn on 8th of June 1814
Died on 11th of April 1884
Reade (with a third) became a fellow of Magdalen College, Oxford, retaining that position throughout his life, and was called to the bar at Lincoln’s Inn, but he is remembered (if little read) as a novelist and dramatist – he would have preferred those two callings to be listed the other way round, but it was his novels that won him fame and income in his time, and his plays that ate into that money. A great ‘borrower’ of material from other writers, he is possibly referred to more for what we would now call the plagiarism in his works than for the works themselves.
