Rawsthorne was pushed by his parents (his father a doctor) towards the professions (briefly studying dentistry then architecture) before starting to make a career in music, at 20 entering the Royal Manchester College of Music before spells of piano study in Poland and Berlin. He became a composer with a very personal and direct style, and enjoyed success with orchestral, chamber and piano music (his Bagatelles particularly well worth seeking out), also writing a few film scores including to great acclaim that for The Cruel Sea, and filling several teaching positions.
