Better known by his second name, Michael, Ramsay rose through the church to become Archbishop of Canterbury in 1961, retiring in 1974. He studied at Repton and at Magdalene College Cambridge before embarking on career that included chairs in divinity at Durham and Cambridge, and the bishoprics of Durham and York. His ecumenical convictions saw him visit the Pope in Rome, and begin rebuilding bridges with the Methodists.
