William Prynne

William Prynne’s career illustrates the confused and polemical times around the English Civil War. A graduate of Oriel Oxford who qualified for the bar at Lincoln’s Inn Prynne’s Puritan zealotry saw him publish scores of books and pamphlets railing against causes great and small. One such, ostensibly against actresses, was seen as an insult to Queen Henrietta Maria, for which the Star Chamber sentenced him to life imprisonment, a huge fine, and the loss of his ears. He was branded on the cheeks for another attacking Archbishop Laud, whose trial he later prosecuted. He opposed, however, Charles I’s execution and facilitated the Restoration.
