John Henry Poynting studied at Cambridge after five years at what later became Manchester University. As an academic he spent more than 30 years at Birmingham University and the institution that was its forerunner. A physicist and mathematician he researched and wrote on a range of topics including gravitation, radiation, and electrical phenomena, developing the Poynting Vector. A physics textbook he co-authored was a standard undergraduate resource for several decades.
