Parry was born into a family of considerable wealth and privilege, showed early musical talent though his school Eton was not the best place to build on that, and then went to Oxford where he studied law and history. Studying music while working at Lloyds of London he eventually turned to music full time, contributing significantly to Grove’s Dictionary, serving as a professor then director of the RCM, as a music professor at Oxford, and composing. He wrote in various forms, but is best remembered for his music for the hymns Jerusalem and Dear Lord and Father of Mankind.
