BOOK PETERBOROUGH HOTELS

William Paley
- Favourite Briton.

Born in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire
Born on 0st of July 1743
Died on 25th of May 1805

Paley was a mathematics student, indeed he was senior wrangler at Cambridge in 1763. He taught moral philosophy, and was a strong anti-slavery campaigner (and consequently a supporter of the colonies in the American Revolution, reasoning independence would end that trade). His extensive theological writings earned him patronage from various senior clerics. He was the first to use the teleological ‘watchmaker’ analogy in his 1802 work Natural Theology.
