Ogden was educated at Rossall School then Magdalene College, Cambridge. He founded and edited The Cambridge Magazine while an undergraduate, co-founded the Heretics Society, which attracted some significant speakers, was a literary editor of some note, and a passionate collector of books. His greatest claim-to-fame, however, was as the originator of Basic English, whose vocabulary of just 850 words were intended to help spread its use by non-native speakers.
