Originally Mary Norton hoped to become an actress, and joined the Old Vic Theatre Company for a time. Marriage, family life, and work for the British government in WWII New York followed before she began to write and publish children’s books. She is best remembered for the stories that Disney worked into the magical Bedknobs and Broomsticks, and for the equally charming Borrowers series.
