BOOK WAPPING HOTELS

John Newton
- Favourite Briton.

Born in Wapping, London
Born on 24th of July 1725
Died on 21st of December 1807

Newton’s youth was an adventurous one: after sailing with his father for a time he was press-ganged into the navy, flogged for attempted desertion, joined a slaver and became effectively a slave himself in Africa for a time, and then when rescued experienced a sudden conversion to Christianity (though he continued slaving for a time). He eventually became a fervent abolitionist, took Anglican holy orders, and became known for his hymns, some of which are sung in Britain and the USA still.
