Ernest Newman
- Favourite Briton.

Born in Liverpool, Merseyside
Born on 30th of November 1868
Died on 7th of July 1959

Ernest Newman was the rather arch pen name of William Roberts, born and educated in Liverpool, including his degree at its then University College. An ungifted musician but brilliant musicologist, Newman became the doyen of music critics here for half a century and more, writing for The Birmingham Post, Manchester Guardian, Observer and Sunday Times, as well as for a time working as an academic. His elegant but determinedly factual style won him many admirers. Newman wrote widely on musical subjects, his biography of Wagner still a standard reference.
