The son of a cabinet maker, Arthur Negus became an antiques dealer then a fine art auctioneer. His extensive knowledge and easy, unpretentious manner, along with a lovely Berkshire lilt, made him a TV natural on the panel show Going for a Song on which he appeared between 1966 and 1976, and later on The Antiques Roadshow.
