Edward Mellanby

Mellanby studied physiology at Cambridge, before undertaking medical training in London, qualifying in 1913. His research showed that rickets apparently had a dietary cause (only in fact partially correct). Mellanby campaigned for public health improvements through better dietary and nutritional research and information. He was Secretary to the Medical Research council for 16 years, and advised the government on nutrition during WWII.
