Dan Maskell

Dan Maskell more than earned the right to commentate on the Wimbledon Tennis Championships, as he did for the BBC from 1949 to 1991 when he retired (the first two years on the radio, the rest for television). He worked as a ballboy at Queens before, aged just 16, becoming a tennis, real tennis and rackets coach there. As a professional he was unable to play at the strictly amateur Wimbledon and other major tournaments of his era, so he organised and won the first World Professional Tennis Championships, and then dominated the British equivalent until 1951. Like John Arlott in cricket Maskell was for several generations of British sports lovers one of the voices of summer.
