John Marshall
Born in Chester, CheshireBorn on 19th of March 1876
Died on 17th of August 1958
Though he studied Classics at Cambridge, and did his earliest archaeological work in Greece, it is for his many years of work in India that Sir John Marshall is best remembered. He made major changes in the organisation of the Indian Archaeological Survey (not least initiating the recruitment of Indians to it), its records and preservation work, and directed digs and research at sites like Taxila and Sanchi. The outstanding result of his efforts was the revelation of Indian civilisation’s greater than previously realised antiquity.
