BOOK STILLINGFLEET HOTELS

Clements Markham
- Favourite Briton.

Born in Stillingfleet, North Yorkshire
Born on 20th of July 1830
Died on 30th of January 1916

After service in the Royal Navy (during which he voyaged to the Arctic), Markham worked for the India Office, where his most significant act was introducing quinine-producing trees to the sub-continent from South America. He became President of the Royal Geographical Society where he proved a great supporter of Robert Scott’s Antarctic Expeditions, not always with academic neutrality, equally the case with his many geographical writings.
