BOOK NEW BRIGHTON HOTELS

Malcolm Lowry
- Favourite Briton.

Born in New Brighton, Merseyside
Born on 28th of July 1909
Died on 26th of June 1957

Malcolm Lowry came from a wealthy background, against which he, half-heartedly perhaps, rebelled. Rather than go up to Cambridge he signed on (with parental permission) as a deckhand on a voyage to the Far East. When he was 20 he took up a place at St Catherine’s College, Cambridge, writing his first novel, Ultramarine, while an undergraduate. He is most famous for his second, Under the Volcano, whose central character and setting echo elements of his own life, not least the excessive drinking that contributed to his death aged just 47.
