Longman, the son of a Bristol merchant, founded the publishing house that continues to carry his name. Though orphaned by the age of nine he inherited a comfortable income from his mother, money that coupled with expertise gained in his apprenticeship to a London bookseller allowed him to buy that business when his seven-year term was completed. His Paternoster Row business published, among other important works, Dr Johnson’s Dictionary and David Hume’s A Treatise of Human Nature.
