William Lilye
Born in Odiham, HampshireBorn in 1468
Died on 25th of February 1522
Lilye, or Lily, had an adventurous existence for a while after his studies at Magdelen College, Oxford. He went on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, then returned via Rhodes (where he learned Greek from refugees from Constantinople), Rome and Venice. On returning to London he became a private tutor of grammar before being appointed the first headmaster of St Paul’s School. The Eton Latin Grammar in which he had a major part was used widely in Britain until the 19th century. He died of the plague.
