Mary Levison, born Mary Lusk, gained a first in PPE at Oxford (where her father was Church of Scotland chaplain), after which she studied divinity at Edinburgh, Basle and Heidelberg. She became a deaconess of her church in 1954, and became the foremost figure in the campaign for the ordination of women in that church, succeeding in her aim well before the Church of England decided on a similar course. Her autobiography’s title, Wrestling with the Church, speaks volumes of her struggles.
