Wigan-born Leland was educated in Ireland, and entered the Presbyterian ministry there in 1716, completing a DD with Aberdeen University in 1739. His fame rests on his many writings against deistical thinkers like Bolingbroke, Thomas Morgan and Matthew Tindal, the most celebrated product of which was his book A View of the Principal Deistical Writers.
