William Law
Born in Kingscliffe, NorthamptonshireBorn in 1686
Died on 9th of April 1761
The son of a grocer, William Law became a fellow of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, in 1711, but on George I’s accession in 1714 refused the oath of allegiance, his sympathies being Jacobite. He became a curate in London, then tutored Edward Gibbon, father of the future historian. He remained with that family for several years, during which he became a spiritual guide to many of serious mind like John Wesley. In later years he retired to his place of birth to live a life of contemplation and prayer. Law engaged in various Anglican controversies via his writings.
