(full name and title: Denis Law)
Born: February 24, 1940

Denis Law is a former professional footballer and Scottish International who is particularly remembered for his time at Manchester United. His long career spanned from the mid 1950s to the mid 1970s. During this time he was a consistently successful striker, scoring 30 goals in 55 appearances for the Scottish national side.

Law started his professional career at Huddersfield Town, despite the reservations of the manager when Law arrived for his trial. The squinting Law was described by him as 'puny and bespectacled'. Nevertheless Law was taken on and his professional career was underway. He had an operation to correct his squint which proved a great help and he was soon getting noticed by bigger clubs. He made his debut for Scotland in 1958 and quickly settled into a regular place after scoring in his first game. Matt Busby reputedly offered to buy him for Manchester United but was turned down. Bill Shankly, Law's manager at Huddersfield between 1957 and 1958, wanted to take Law with him to Liverpool. However the Merseyside club could not afford Law at the time. In 1960 he briefly joined Manchester City for a then record fee of £55 000.

The Scotsman was hungry for a more successful side and so in 1961 he moved on to Torino in Italy. Law was successful for Torino but, like many British players who tried the Italian League in the 1960s, he failed to settle. In 1962 he signed for Manchester United, the beginning of a nine year spell in which Law scored 171 goals in 309 games. He was voted European Player of the Year in 1964, and also won the FA Cup with United in 1963 and the Football League championship in 1965 and 1967.

In 1972 he was given a free transfer back to Manchester City where in one of his final games he scored a cheeky back heel goal against Manchester United, which he thought at the time had consigned them to relegation. Law was forlorn after the goal and was substituted straight away. Afterwards it became clear that, due to other results, United would have gone down anyway.
