Harold Larwood

Larwood was the son of a miner who himself went down the pit when just 14. Though short he was a very successful club cricketer, a fast and accurate bowler, his reputation seeing him given a trial and contract by Nottingham. Larwood is famous for his part in the bodyline bowling farrago, ordered in Ashes tests in Australia in 1932-33 by the unpleasant Douglas Jardine to bowl at the batter’s body. His treatment by the authorities afterwards saw him quit test cricket. After WWII he and his family emigrated to Australia, where strangely he was treated better by his erstwhile opponents than he had been by the MCC.
