Edward Lane
- Favourite Briton.

Born in Hereford, Herefordshire
Born on 17th of September 1801
Died on 10th of August 1876

Lane was a younger son of a cleric who began training as an engraver in London before poor health, and an interest in Egypt, led to him travelling to Alexandria and Cairo, where he studied Arabic and gathered material for a book on contemporary Egyptian life. His translation of the 1001 Nights was accurate if bowdlerised. He also published Selections from the Koran, and then from 1842 to his death devoted his life to producing an Arabic-English lexicon. Lane married a slave-girl he had bought or been given.
