John Lambert
Born in Settle, North YorkshireBorn in 1619
Died in 1684
Lambert served the Parliamentary army with distinction in the Civil Wars, at Marston Moor leading the cavalry, fighting alongside Cromwell in Scotland, and acting as one of his senior commanders at the Battle of Worcester. Lambert was of clear republican sympathies, active in helping Cromwell become Lord Protector, but against him being made king, and writing The Instrument of Government, the only written constitution we have ever enjoyed. He resisted the Restoration, and was duly imprisoned from 1660 to 1684 when he died.
