Educated at Manchester Grammar School and what became Manchester University, Frederick Kipping was professor of chemistry at Nottingham University for nearly forty years, and was a renowned expert on silicon chemistry, his efforts facilitating the use of silicon in synthetic rubber, plastics (including for high temperature applications) and silicone (a term he coined) lubricants.
