Thomas Ken
Born in Little Berkhampstead, HertfordshireBorn in 1631
Died in 1711
Ken is chiefly remembered for the hymns he wrote while a cleric at Winchester, the most famous being Awake, my soul and Praise God from whom all blessings flow. He enjoyed, or perhaps didn’t, a rather varied career in the church: appointed as chaplain to Princess Mary he fell out with the future William III; angered Charles II by refusing his quarters as a place for Nell Gwynne to stay, but because of that stance was made Bishop of Bath and Wells by him; and lost that bishopric when he refused to forswear allegiance to James II after the Glorious Revolution.
