John Kay is remembered as the inventor of the flying shuttle, which was a major milestone in the advance of Britain’s textile industry, reducing the number of workers needed to operate looms, allowing for broader looms, and speeding production. His patent was deliberately abused by manufacturers, law suits to defend it nearly ruined him, and textile workers loathed him, so he spent much of the last part of his life in France helping their industry, with little better financial result.
