Hewlett Johnson
Born in Macclesfield, CheshireBorn on 25th of January 1874
Died on 22nd of October 1966
Johnson took a civil engineering degree, and did welfare work among the poor of Manchester before training for the priesthood in Oxford. He is remembered as The Red Dean for his unwavering support of all things Soviet, though he never became (formally at least) a communist. Johnson was Dean of Canterbury from 1931 to 1963. Though he appeared honest in his sympathies, his blinkered approach to Stalin’s evils and his sometimes facile arguments won him few friends even on the left.
