Died on 21st of June 1968

Johns served in WWI with the British army at Gallipoli and in Greece, then in 1917 transferred to the Royal Flying Corps, after his training serving as a bomber pilot on the Western Front. He was shot down and spent the last few months of the war as a POW. The first novel of a prolific career appeared in 1922, the first Biggles book published 10 years later, a year after he left the RAF. It was with Biggles that he won great fame, though he wrote several other series including those featuring the commando Gimlet and WAAF pilot Worrals.
