Eric James
- Favourite Briton.

Born in Derby, Derbyshire
Born on 13rd of April 1909
Died on 16th of May 1992

Eric James, who in 1959 became Baron James of Rusholme, was a leading educational thinker unafraid to speak against accepted wisdom in his field. A believer in meritocratic advancement he saw grammar schools as the route to social mobility (he was a successful high master of Manchester Grammar School from 1945 to 1962), and vice chancellor of York University from 1962 to 1973. He was involved in the establishment of York, thus able to create a collegiate structure, facilitate student-tutor interaction by housing many of its staff and students in close proximity, push for the best teaching in a deliberately limited range of subjects, and use tutorials as the main teaching method. He also published a much admired if little acted on report on teacher training.
