Ingrams is that rather British contradiction, a very establishment figure whose career has largely involved poking fun at that establishment (and more seriously, pointing out some of its more corrupt and evil aspects). Partly through contacts from his schooldays at Shrewsbury he in 1963 fell into the editorship of Private Eye (of which he was a co-founder), a role he then held until 1986. He founded The Oldie in 1992, has authored or edited scores of books, and like all right-thinking people he is a fan of Beachcomber.
