Born into the celebrated and gifted Huxley family, half-brother of Aldous and Julian, Andrew Huxley showed early potential as an engineer, the subject he intended to study at Trinity College, Cambridge, but he was pulled towards physiology instead. Huxley won the Nobel Prize for Medicine or Physiology in 1963, with two other researchers, for work on nerve transmission, and was a pioneer too in our understanding of how muscles function. He taught at Cambridge and UCL, and was knighted in 1974.
