Though born in Southgate Hunt was the son of an American preacher. He published (privately) a collection of poems in his teens, and continued writing poetry and later essays throughout a long career, but it is as editor of various periodicals - The Examiner, The Indicator and The Liberal – that he made his mark, providing platforms and a meeting points for more gifted literary figures of liberal leanings including Byron, Keats and Shelley. Leigh Hunt spent two years in prison for libelling the Prince Regent, for which he deserves additional credit.
