Shirley Hughes studied at Liverpool School of Art and Oxford’s Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art, and initially worked as an illustrator of other people’s books for children, most memorably My Naughty Little Sister by Dorothy Edwards. She eventually began to write her own stories (and naturally to illustrate them), the most famous of them being the charming and delightful Alfie series.
