The outstanding early academic career enjoyed by Edith How at University College Aberystwyth in itself was a shining example of the clear justice of the suffragette cause she espoused in her youth. How was a member of the Women’s Social and Political Union from 1905 to 1907, when her concerns about its violent path caused her to establish the breakaway Women’s Freedom League, though she herself took direct action in 1906, attempting to speak in the Commons for which she was jailed. She had a brief political career, and then devoted much of the remainder of her life to promoting birth control in the UK and India as a liberating force for women.
