John Hoppner

Died on 23rd of January 1810
Hoppner was one of the great portrait painters of Georgian England, famed for his masterpiece The Countess of Oxford, along with other pictures of the great and the good of his time including Sir Walter Scott, Nelson and Wellington. His mother (like his father, German) was an attendant to the royal family, giving the young Hoppner an entree to powerful patrons and contacts. He studied at the Royal Academy, collaborated with Gainsborough, and married the daughter of an American sculptress.
