Harold Hopkins is one of those British scientists whose name is unfamiliar to most of us, but whose discoveries and their uses have made a major difference to our everyday lives. He studied at University College Leicester, than (after a brief period of army service) worked on optics and optical designs for the wartime government, simultaneously studying for his PhD. A mathematical genius who translated that ability into practical advances, his work at ICL and Reading University led to advances like the zoom lens, endoscopy and thus key-hole surgery, and fibre optics.
