Born 1811. Died 1891 - English engineer.

Was consulting engineer in the construction of Charing Cross and Cannon Street stations and the London Inner Circle underground railway. Designed the Narmada bridge in India and was engineer for the Amsterdam Ship Canal. Constructed the Severn Tunnel in 1887. Was one of the engineers of the original Channel Tunnel project.

Hawkshaw was responsible only for final section of Inner Circle underground. He was chief engineer of the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway to 1850, then its consulting engineer to 1888. Knighted in 1873 after completing Holyhead harbour.
