Joined Manchester Repertory Theatre in 1930. London debut in Love on the Dole (1935), film debut in Lancashire Luck (1937). Invited to play Eliza in Pygmalion(1938) by George Bernard Shaw. One of Britain’s leading stage performers, made sporadic film appearances. Created DBE in 1975.
