Educated at Balliol College, Oxford. Early short stories included Night Fears (1924) and The Killing Bottle (1932), followed by his Eustace and Hilda triology. His best known novel is The Go-Between (1953). Later novels included A Perfect Woman (1955) and My Sister’s Keeper (1970).
