Born 1560. Died 1621 - Astronomer and mathematician.

Studied at St Mary Hall, Oxford. Mathematical tutor to Sir Walter Raleigh. Sent to America to survey Virginia. Studied optics, refraction and the formation of rainbows. Most of his work was never published though some of his drawings of the Moon, sunspots and satellites of Jupiter survive.
