Born 1986. Died 1985 - English marine biologist.

Studied at Oxford University. Was chief zoologist on the Discovery expedition to study plankton in the Antarctic (1924-27), his results showing the relationship between whales and plankton. Held a number of positions including the Professor of Zoology at Hull University, Professor of Natural History at the University of Aberdeen and Linacre Professor of Zoology in Oxford. Elected FRS in 1940 and knighted in 1957.
